I’ve just written an piece for the Institute of Art and Ideas in London. It’s about how the idea of “learning from nature” amounts to an epistemological revolution that could potentially underlie a New Enlightenment. The basic idea of the first Enlightenment was that all knowledge comes from the cognitive faculties of humans, but overlooking nature as a source of knowledge in this way has proved environmentally catastrophic. It’s not just our technology and our ethics that need to change, but also our understanding of the origin and nature of knowledge!
